“In March of 2011 enough plutonium blew out of the reactors to kill all life on Earth. Radiation poisoning doesn’t kill right away. It will take about 5 years for the deaths to start, then in about 20…well lets just say we need to change this reality we are being force-fed. Yes…the whole ‘collapse of spent fuel pool #4 ending the world’ is a crock of shit…it already happened March 2011.” Nancy Lazaryan

The biggest realizations I’ve had about the global nuclear scenario in the wake of Fukushima are 1) it’s ASTRONOMICALLY worse than anyone can imagine, and 2) NO ONE really knows the whole story with respect to exactly what quantities and lethalities exist of the almost 2000 synthetic radio-nuclides currently poisoning the biosphere and causing ‘genomic instability’ in all kingdoms of life.  What is generally agreed upon is not numerical information but the observation that we are only just beginning to witness the biological effects of Fukushima radio-nuclides, in particular plutonium, as the incidence of anomalous cancers, symptoms of acute radiation poisoning, and mutations soar globally.  No one, no life form is immune with the possible exception of anaerobic cyanobacteria.

Russia: Arctic Nuke Reactors Could Explode (December 6, 2012)

Terrifying news has been released by the Russian government and as usual the American media is busy reporting on drunken movie stars and political idiots. Russian authorities have announced they fear that 14 nuclear reactors dumped into the Arctic ocean by the defunct Soviet Union-some of the reactors overflowing with highly radioactive fuel rods-“could re-achieve criticality and explode” at any time. (…) The potential Russian nuke catastrophe would far surpass the Chernobyl reactor accident and experts in Norway conclude such a nuclear event could easily dwarf the ongoing disaster with the four TEPCO reactors in Fukushima, Japan.Monumental environmental disaster in the makingWestern media has suppressed a potential planetary disaster that’s accelerating at this very moment.

Russia’s navy will be reinforced with 51 modern warships and 24 submarines, including eight fitted to carry nuclear missiles, by 2020. Over $140 billion will be spent on realizing the “potential of the sea-based nuclear force,” Vladimir Putin said. To maintain Russia’s place as a leading sea power Russia will allocate over 4.5 trillion rubles to build the vessels over the next eight years. CLIP

“What Are We Making Weapons for?” John Denver (music video, Denver reckons this is the most important song he ever did)

NOTE:  This animation shows the dispersal patterns for approx. the first month after 11 march 2011.  In 15 days the entire northern hemisphere was contaminated, and after one month it had crossed the equator into the southern hemisphere.  We don’t know how many radio-nuclides were being ‘simulated’ here, but we do know that the releases from Fukushima have been on-going continuously from day one. There aren’t enough zeroes to signify the amount of radio-nuclides that have been released into the planetary biosphere.

THROUGH A NARROW WINDOW (chapter thirteen)

For mankind as a whole, a possession infinitely more valuable than individual life is our genetic heritage, our link with past and future. Shaped through long aeons of evolution, our genes not only make us what we are, but hold in their minute beings the future – be it one of promise or threat. Yet genetic deterioration through man-made agents is the menace of our time, ‘the last and greatest danger to our civilization.’

Again, the parallel between chemicals and radiation is exact and inescapable.

The living cell assaulted by radiation suffers a variety of injuries: its ability to divide normally may be destroyed, it may suffer changes in chromosomal structure, or the genes, carriers of hereditary material, may undergo those sudden changes known as mutations, which cause them to produce new characteristics in succeeding generations. If especially susceptible the cell may be killed outright, or finally, after the passage of time measured in years, it may become malignant.

All these consequences of radiation have been duplicated in laboratory studies by a large group of chemicals known as radio-mimetic or mutation-imitating. Many chemicals used in pesticides – herbicides as well as insecticides – belong to this group of substances that have the ability to damage the chromosomes, interfere with normal cell division, or cause mutations. These injuries ot the genetic material are of a kind that may lead to disease in the individual exposed or they may make their effects felt in future generations.

Only a few decades ago, no one knew these effects of either radiation or chemicals. In those days the atom had not been split and few of the chemicals that were to duplicate radiation has as yet been conceived in the test tubes of chemists. Then in 1927, a professor of zoology in a Texas university, Dr. H. J. Muller, found that by exposing an organism to x-radiation, he could produce mutations in succeeding generations. With Muller’s discovery a vast new field of scientific and medical knowledge was opened up. Muller later received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his achievement, and in a world that soon gained familiarity with the grey rains of fall-out, even the non-scientist now knows the potential results of radiation.

Although far less noticed, a companion discovery was made by Charlotte Auerbach and William Robson at the University of Edinburgh in the early 1940’s. Working with mustard gas, they found that this chemical produced permanent chromosome abnormalities that cannot be distinguished from those induced by radiation. Tested on the fruit fly, the same organism that Muller had used in his original work with X-rays, mustard gas also produced mutations. Thus the first chemical mutagen was discovered.

Mustard gas as a mutagen has now been joined by a long list of other chemicals known to alter genetic material in plants and animals…

Dr. Peter Alexander, an outstanding British authority, has said that the radio-mimetic chemicals ‘may well represent a greater danger’ than radiation. Dr. Muller, with the perspective gained by decades of distinguished work in genetics, warns that various chemicals (including groups represented by pesticides)…can raise the mutation frequency as much as radiation…As yet far too little known of the extent to which our genes, under modern conditions of exposures to unusual chemicals, are being subjected to such mutagenic influences.

ONE IN EVERY FOUR (chapter fourteen)

The battle of living things against cancer began so long ago that its origin is lost in time. But it must have begun, in a natural environment, in which whatever life inhabited the earth, was subjected, for good or ill, to influences that had their origin in sun and storm and the ancient nature of the earth. Some of the elements of this environment created hazards to which life had to adjust or perish. The ultraviolet radiation in sunlight could cause malignancy. So could radiations from certain rocks, or arsenic washed out of soil or rocks to contaminate food or water supplies.

The environment contained these hostile elements even before there was life; yet life arose, and over the millions of years it came to exist in infinite numbers and endless variety…These natural cancer-causing agents are still a factor in producing malignancy; however, they are few in number and they belong to that ancient array of forces to which life has been accustomed, from the beginning.

With the advent of man the situation began to change, for man, alone of all forms of life, can create cancer-producing substances, which in medical terminology are called carcinogens. A few man-made carcinogens have been part of the environment for centuries. An example is soot, containing aromatic hydrocarbons. With the dawn of the industrial era, the world became a place of continuous, ever-accelerating change. Instead of the natural environments there was rapidly substituted an artificial one composed of new chemical and physical agents, many of them possessing powerful capacities for inducing biological change. Against these carcinogens which his own activities had created man had no protection, for even as his biological heritage had evolved slowly, so it adapts slowly to new conditions. As a result these powerful substances could easily penetrate the inadequate defenses of the body.

The history of cancer is long, but our recognition of the agents that produce it has been slow to mature…

One of the most impressive theories of the origin of cancer cells was developed by a German biochemist, Prof. Otto Warburg of the Max Planck Institute of Cell Physiology. Warburg has devoted a lifetime of study to the complex processes of oxidation within the cell. Out of this broad background of understanding came a fascinating and lucid explanation of the way a normal cell can become malignant.

Warburg believes that either radiation or a chemical carcinogen acts by destroying the respiration of normal cells, thus depriving them of energy. This action may result form minute doses often repeated. The effect, once achieved, is irreversible. The cells not killed outright by the impact of such a respiratory poison struggle to compensate for the loss of energy. They can no longer carry on that extraordinary and efficient cycle in which vast amounts of ATP are produced, bgut are thrown back on a primitive and far less efficient method, that of fermentation. The struggle to survive by fermentation continues for a long period of time. It continues through ensuing cell divisions, so that all the descendant cells have this abnormal method of respiration…At last they reach the point where fermentation is able to produce as much energy as respiration. At this point cancer cells may be said to have been created from normal body cells…

The Warburg theory also explains why repeated small doses of a carcinogen are more dangerous under some circumstances than a single large dose. The latter may kill the cells outright, whereas the small doses allow some to survive, though in a damaged condition. These survivors may then develop into cancer cells. This is why there is no ‘safe’ dose of a carcinogen.

In Warburg’s theory we also find explanation of an otherwise incomprehensible fact – that one and the same agent can be useful in treating cancer and can also cause it. This, as everyone knows, is true of radiation, which kills cancer cells but may also cause cancer. It is also true of many of the chemicals now used against cancer. Why? Both types of agents damage respiration. Cancer cells already have a defective respiration, so with additional damage they die. The normal cells, suffering respiratory damage for the first time, are not killed but are set on the path that may eventually lead to malignancy.

Measured by the standards established by Warburg, most pesticides meet the criterion of the perfect carcinogen too well for comfort…they may be creating sleeping cancer cells, cells in which an irreversible malignancy will slumber long and undetected – its cause long forgotten and even unsuspected – it flares into the open as recognizable cancer.

“…used nuclear fuel, some of it decades old, languishes in holding tanks. Oddly, it is up to a million times more radioactive than when it was fresh. While in the reactor, it began mutating into elements heavier than enriched uranium, such as isotopes of plutonium and americium…At WIPP…the U.S. Department’ of Energy is legally required to dissuade anyone from coming too close for the next 10,000 years. After discussing the fact that human languages mutate so fast that they’re almost unrecognizable after 500 or 600 years, it was decided to post warnings in seven of them anyway, plus pictures…Since Palo Verde opened in 1986, its used fuel has been accumulating, because there’s nowhere else to take it. In plants everywhere, spent fuel ponds have been re-racked to squeeze in thousands of more fuel assemblies. Together, the world’s 441 functioning nuclear plants annually produce almost 13,000 tons of high-level nuclear scrap…”

“Hot Legacy”, Chapter 15, The World Without Us, Alan Weisman

The Stakes

As befits a chain reaction, it happened very fast. In 1938, a physicist named Enrico Fermi went from Fascist Italy to Stockholm to accept the Nobel Prize for his work with neutrons and atomic nuclei—and kept going, defecting with his Jewish wife to the United States.  That same year, word leaked that two German chemists had split uranium atoms by bombarding them with neutrons. Their work confirmed Fermi’s own experiments. He had guessed correctly that when neutrons cracked an atomic nucleus, they would set more neutrons free. Each would scatter like a subatomic shotgun pellet, and with enough uranium handy, they would find more nuclei to destroy. The process would cascade, and a lot of energy would be released. He suspected Nazi Germany would be interested in that.

On December 2, 1942, in a squash court beneath the stadium at the University of Chicago, Fermi and his new American colleagues produced a controlled nuclear chain reaction. Their primitive reactor was a beehive-shaped pile of graphite bricks laced with uranium. By inserting rods coated with cadmium, which absorbs neutrons, they could moderate the exponential shattering of uranium atoms to keep it from getting out of hand.

Less than three years later, in the New Mexico desert, they did just the opposite. The nuclear reaction this time was intended to go completely out of control. Immense energy was released, and within a month the act was repeated twice, over two Japanese cities. More than 100,000 people died instantly, and the dying continued long after the initial blast. Ever since, the human race has been simultaneously terrified and fascinated by the double deadliness of nuclear fission: fantastic destruction followed by slow torture.

If we left this world tomorrow—assuming by some means other than blowing ourselves to bits—we would leave behind about 30,000 intact nuclear warheads. The chance of any exploding with us gone is effectively zero. The fissionable material inside a basic uranium bomb is separated into chunks that, to achieve the critical mass necessary for detonation, must be slammed together with a speed and precision that don’t occur in nature. Dropping them, striking them, plunging them in water, or rolling a boulder over them would do nothing. In the tiny chance that the polished surfaces of enriched uranium in a deteriorated bomb actually met, unless forced together at gunshot speed, they would fizzle—albeit in a very messy way.

A plutonium weapon contains a single fissionable ball that must be forcibly, exactly compressed to at least twice its density to explode. Otherwise, it’s simply a poisonous lump. What will happen, however, is that bomb housings will ultimately corrode, exposing the hot innards of these devices to the elements. Since weapons-grade plutonium-239 has a half-life of 24,110 years, even if it took an ICBM cone 5,000 years to disintegrate, most of the 10 to 20 pounds of plutonium it contained would not have degraded. The plutonium would throw off alpha particles—clumps of protons and neutrons heavy enough to be blocked by fur or even thick skin, but disastrous to any creature unlucky enough to inhale them. (In humans, 1 millionth of a gram can cause lung cancer.) In 125,000 years, there would be less than a pound of it, though it would still be plenty lethal. It would take 250,000 years before the levels were lost in the Earth’s natural background radiation. At that point, however, whatever lives on Earth would still have to contend with the still-deadly dregs of 441 nuclear plants.

When big, unstable atoms like uranium decay naturally, or when we rip them apart, they emit charged particles and electromagnetic rays similar to the strongest X-rays. Both are potent enough to alter living cells and DNA. As these deformed cells and genes reproduce and replicate, we sometimes get another kind of chain reaction, called cancer. Since background radiation is always present, organisms have adjusted accordingly by selecting, evolving, or sometimes just succumbing. Anytime we raise the natural background dosage, we force living tissue to respond.

Two decades prior to harnessing nuclear fission, first for bombs, then for power plants, humans had already let one electromagnetic genie loose—the result of a goof we wouldn’t recognize until nearly 60 years later. In that instance, we didn’t coax radiation out but let it sneak in. That radiation was ultraviolet, a considerably lower energy wave than the gamma rays emitted from atomic nuclei, but it was suddenly present at levels unseen since the beginning of life on Earth. Those levels are still rising, and although we have hopes to correct that over the next half century, our untimely departure could leave them in an elevated state far longer.

Ultraviolet rays helped to fashion life as we know it—and, oddly enough, they created the ozone layer itself, our shield against too much exposure to them. Back when the primordial goo of the planet’s surface was being pelted with unimpeded UV radiation from the sun, at some pivotal instant—perhaps sparked by a jolt of lightning—the first biological mix of molecules jelled. Those living cells mutated rapidly under the high energy of ultraviolet rays, metabolizing inorganic compounds and turning them into new organic ones. Eventually, one of these reacted to the presence of carbon dioxide and sunlight in the primitive atmosphere by giving off a new kind of exhaust: oxygen.

That gave ultraviolet rays a new target. Picking off pairs of oxygen atoms joined together—02 molecules—they split them apart. The two singles would immediately latch onto nearby 02 molecules, forming 03: ozone. But UV easily breaks the ozone molecule’s extra atom off, reforming oxygen; just as quickly, that atom sticks to another pair, forming more ozone until it absorbs more ultraviolet and spins off again. Gradually, beginning about 10 miles above the surface, a state of equilibrium emerged: ozone was constantly being created, pulled apart, and recombined, and thus constantly occupying UV rays so that they never reached the ground. As the layer of ozone stabilized, so did the life on Earth it was shielding. Eventually, species evolved that could never have tolerated the former levels of UV radiation bombardment. Eventually, one of them was us.

In the 1930s, however, humans started undermining the oxygen-ozone balance, which had remained relatively constant since soon after life began. That’s when we started using Freon, the trademark name for chlorofluorocarbons, the man-made chlorine compounds in refrigeration.

Called CFCs for short, they seemed so safely inert that we put them into aerosol cans and asthma-medication inhalers, and blew them into polymer foams to make disposable coffee cups and running shoes.

In 1974, University of California-Irvine chemists F. Sherwood Rowland and Mario Molina began to wonder where CFCs went once those refrigerators or materials broke down, since they were so impervious to combining with anything else.

Eventually, they decided that hitherto indestructible CFCs must be floating to the stratosphere, where they would finally meet their match in the form of powerful ultraviolet rays. The molecular slaughter would free pure chlorine, a voracious gobbler of loose oxygen atoms, whose presence kept those same ultraviolet rays away from Earth.

No one paid Rowland and Molina much heed until 1985, when Joe Farman, a British researcher in Antarctica, discovered that part of the sky was missing. For decades, we’d been dissolving our UV screen by soaking it with chlorine. Since then, in unprecedented cooperation, the nations of the world have tried to phase out ozone-eating chemicals. The results are encouraging, but still mixed: Ozone destruction has slowed, but a black market in CFCs thrives, and some are still legally produced for “basic domestic needs” in developing countries. Even the replacements we commonly use today, hydro-chloro-fluoro-carbons, HCFCs, are simply milder ozone-destroyers, scheduled to be phased out themselves—though the question of with what isn’t easily answered.

Quite apart from ozone damage, both HCFCs and CFCs—and their most common chlorine-free substitute, hydro-fluoro-carbons, HFCs—have many times the potential of carbon dioxide to exacerbate global warming.

The use of all these alphabetical concoctions will stop, of course, if human activity does, but the damage we did to the sky may last a lot longer. The best current hope is that the South Pole’s hole, and the thinning of the ozone layer everywhere else, will heal by 2060, after destructive substances are exhausted. This assumes that something safe will have replaced them, and that we’ll have found ways to get rid of existing supplies that haven’t yet drifted skyward. Destroying something designed to be indestructible, however, turns out to be expensive, requiring sophisticated, energy-intensive tools such as argon plasma arcs and rotary kilns that aren’t readily available in much of the world.

As a result, especially in developing countries, millions of tons of CFCs are still used or linger in aging equipment, or are mothballed. If we vanish, millions of CFC and HCFC automobile air conditioners, and millions more domestic and commercial refrigerators, refrigerated trucks and railroad cars, as well as home and industry air-cooling units, will all finally crack and give up the chloro-fluoro-carbonated ghost of a 20th-century idea that went very awry.

All will rise to the stratosphere, and the convalescing ozone layer will suffer a relapse. Since it won’t happen all at once, with luck the illness will be chronic, not fatal. Otherwise, the plants and animals that remain in our wake will have to select for UV tolerance, or mutate their way through a barrage of electromagnetic radiation.

Tactical and Practical

Uranium-235, with a half-life of 704 million years, is a relatively insignificant fraction of natural uranium ore—barely .7 percent—but we humans have concentrated (“enriched”) several thousand tons of it for use in reactors and bombs. To do that, we extract it from uranium ore, usually by chemically converting it to a gas compound, then spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the different atomic weights. This leaves behind far less potent (“depleted”) U-238, whose half-life is 4.5 billion years: in the United States alone, there’s at least a half-million tons of it. One approach to what to do with some of it involves the fact that U-238 is an unusually dense metal. In recent decades it has proved useful, when alloyed with steel, for fashioning bullets that can pierce armor, including the walls of tanks.

With so much surplus depleted uranium lying around, this is far cheaper for U.S. and European armies than buying the non-radioactive alternative, tungsten, which is mainly found in China. Depleted uranium projectiles range from 25-millimeter bullet size to three-foot-long, 120- millimeter darts with their own internal propellants and stabilizing fins.

Their use kindles outrage over human health issues, on both the firing and receiving end. Because depleted uranium ordnance bursts into flames when it strikes, it leaves a pile of ash. Depleted or not, there’s enough concentrated U-238 in the bullet points that radioactivity in this debris can exceed 1,000 times the normal background level. After we’re gone, the next archaeologists to appear may unearth arsenals of several million of these super-dense, modern versions of Clovis spear points. Not only will they look considerably more fearsome, but—possibly unbeknownst to their discoverers—they’ll emit radiation for more years than the planet likely has left.

There are far hotter things than depleted uranium that will outlast us, whether we’re gone tomorrow or 250,000 years from now. It’s a big enough problem that we contemplate hollowing out entire mountains to store them. Thus far the United States has only one such site, in salt dome formations 2,000 feet below southeastern New Mexico, similar to the chemical-storage caverns below Houston.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, or WIPP, operating since 1999, is the bone-yard for detritus from nuclear weapons and defense research. It can handle 6.2 million cubic feet of waste, the equivalent of about 156,000 55-gallon drums. In fact, much of the plutonium-drenched scrap it receives is packaged just that way. WIPP isn’t designed to store spent fuel from nuclear generating plants, which in the United States alone increases by 3,000 tons each year.

It is a landfill only for so-called low- and midlevel waste—stuff like discarded weapons-assembly gloves, shoe coverings, and rags soaked in contaminated cleaning solvents used in fashioning nuclear bombs. It also holds the dismantled remains of machines used to build them, and even walls from rooms where that happened. All this arrives on shrink-wrapped pallets containing hot hunks of pipe, aluminum conduits, rubber, plastic, cellulose, and miles of wiring. After its first five years, WIPP was already more than 20 percent full.

Its contents come from two dozen high-security warrens across the country, such as the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington, where plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb was made, and Los Alamos, New Mexico, where it was assembled. In 2000, large wildfires hit both sites. Official reports say that unburied radioactive wastes were protected—but in a world without firefighters, they won’t be. Except for WIPP, all U.S. nuclear waste-storage containment is temporary. If it remains that way, fire will eventually breach it and send clouds of radioactive ash billowing across the continent, and possibly across the oceans.

The first site to begin shipping to WIPP was Rocky Flats, a defense facility on a foothills plateau 16 miles northwest of Denver. Until 1989, the United States made plutonium detonators for atomic weapons at Rocky Flats with somewhat less than a lawful regard for safety. For years, thousands of drums of cutting oil saturated with plutonium and uranium were stacked outside on bare ground. When someone finally noticed they were leaking, asphalt was poured over the evidence. Radioactive runoff at Rocky Flats frequently reached local streams; cement was swirled into radioactive sludge in absurd attempts to try to slow seepage from cracked evaporation ponds; and radiation periodically escaped into the air. A 1989 FBI raid finally closed the place. In the new millennium, after several billion dollars’ worth of intensive cleanup and public relations, Rocky Flats was transmuted into a National Wildlife Refuge.

Simultaneously, similar alchemy was recasting the old Rocky Mountain Arsenal next to Denver International Airport. RMA was a chemical weapons plant that made mustard and nerve gas, incendiary bombs, napalm—and during peacetime, insecticides; its core was once called the most contaminated square mile on Earth. After dozens of wintering bald eagles were found in its security buffer, feasting on the prodigious prairie dog population, it, too, became a National Wildlife Refuge. That required draining and sealing an Arsenal lake where ducks once died moments after landing, and where the bottoms of aluminum boats sent to fetch their carcasses rotted within a month. Although the plan is to treat and monitor toxic groundwater plumes for another century until they’re considered safely diluted, today mule deer big as elk find asylum where humans once feared to tread.

A century, however, would make little difference to uranium and plutonium residues whose half-lives start at 24,000 years and keep going. The weapons-grade plutonium from Rocky Flats was shipped to South Carolina, whose governor was enjoined from lying in front of trucks to stop it. There, at the Savannah River Site’s Defense Waste Processing Facility, where two huge buildings (“reprocessing canyons”) are so contaminated that no one knows how they might be decommissioned, high-level nuclear waste is now melted in furnaces with glass beads. When poured into stainless steel containers, it turns into solid blocks of radioactive glass.

This process, called vitrification, is also used in Europe. Glass being one of our simplest, most durable creations, these hot glass bricks may be among the longest-lasting of all human creations. However, in places like England’s Windscale [now called Sellafield] plant, scene of two nuclear accidents before it was finally closed, vitrified waste is stored in air-cooled facilities. One day, should power go off permanently, a chamber full of decaying, glass embedded radioactive material would get steadily warmer, with shattering results.

The Rocky Flats asphalt where drums of radioactive oil spilled was also scraped and shipped to South Carolina, along with three feet of soil. More than half its 800 structures were razed, including the infamous “Infinity Room,” where contamination levels rose higher than instruments could measure. Several buildings were mostly underground; after the removal of items like the glove boxes used to handle the shiny plutonium disks that triggered A-bombs, the basement floors were buried. Atop them, a mix of native bluestem tall grass and side-oats grama grass has been planted to assure a habitat for resident elk, mink, mountain lion, and the threatened Prebel’s meadow jumping mouse, which have impressively thrived in the plant’s 6,000-acre security buffer despite the evil brewing at its center. Regardless of the grim business that went on here, these animals seem to be doing fine. However, while there are plans to monitor the human wildlife managers for radiation intake, a refuge official admits doing no genetic tests on the wildlife itself. “We’re looking at human hazards, not damage to species. Acceptable dose levels are based on 30-year career exposures. Most animals don’t live that long.”

Maybe not. But their genes do.

Anything at Rocky Flats too hard or too hot to move was covered with concrete and 20 feet of fill, and will remain off-limits to hikers in the wildlife preserve, though how they’ll be deterred hasn’t been decided. At WIPP, where much of Rocky Flats ended up, the U.S. Department’ of Energy is legally required to dissuade anyone from coming too close for the next 10,000 years. After discussing the fact that human languages mutate so fast that they’re almost unrecognizable after 500 or 600 years, it was decided to post warnings in seven of them anyway, plus pictures. These will be incised on 25-foot-high, 20-ton granite monuments and repeated on nine-inch disks of fired clay and aluminum oxide, randomly buried throughout the site. More-detailed information about the hazards below will go on the walls of three identical rooms, two of them also buried. The whole thing will be surrounded by a 33-foot-tall earthen berm a half-mile square, embedded with magnets and radar reflectors to give every possible signal to the future that something lurks below.

Whether who-or-whatever finds it someday can actually read, or heed, danger in those messages may be moot: the construction of this complex scarecrow to posterity isn’t scheduled until decades from now, after WIPP is full. Also, after just five years, plutonium-239 was already noticed leaking from WIPP’s exhaust shaft. Among the unpredictables is how all the irradiated plastic, cellulose, and radio-nuclides below will react as brine percolates through the salt formations, and as radioactive decay adds heat. For that reason, no radioactive liquids are allowed lest they volatilize, but many interred bottles and cans contain contaminated residues that will evaporate as temperatures rise. Head space is being left for buildup of hydrogen and methane, but whether it’s enough, and whether WIPP’s exhaust vent will function or clog, is the future’s mystery.

Too Cheap to Meter

At the biggest U.S. nuclear plant, the 3.8-billion-watt Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station in the desert west of Phoenix, water heated by a controlled atomic reaction turns to steam, which spins the three largest turbines General Electric ever manufactured. Most reactors worldwide function similarly; like Enrico Fermi’s original atomic pile, all nuke plants use moveable, neutron-sopping cadmium rods to dampen or intensify the action.

In Palo Verde’s three separate reactors, these dampers are interspersed among nearly 170,000 pencil-thin, 14-foot zirconium-alloy hollow rods stuffed end to end with uranium pellets that each contain as much power as a ton of coal. The rods are bunched into hundreds of assemblies; water flowing among them keeps things cool, and, as it vaporizes, it propels the steam turbines.

Together, the nearly cubical reactor cores, which sit in 45-foot-deep pools of turquoise water, weigh more than 500 tons. Each year, about 30 tons of their fuel is exhausted. Still packed inside the zirconium rods, this nuclear waste is removed by cranes to a flat-roofed building outside the containment dome, where it is submerged in a temporary holding pond that resembles a giant swimming pool, also 45 feet deep.

Since Palo Verde opened in 1986, its used fuel has been accumulating, because there’s nowhere else to take it. In plants everywhere, spent fuel ponds have been re-racked to squeeze in thousands of more fuel assemblies. Together, the world’s 441 functioning nuclear plants annually produce almost 13,000 tons of high-level nuclear scrap. In the United States, most plants have no more pool space, so until there’s a permanent burial ground, waste-fuel rods are now mummified in “dry casks”—steel canisters clad in concrete from which the air and moisture have been sucked. At Palo Verde, where they’ve been used since 2002, these are stored vertically, and resemble giant thermos bottles.

Every country has plans to permanently entomb the stuff. Every country also has citizens terrified of events like earthquakes that could unseal buried waste, and of the chance that some truck carrying it will have a wreck or be hijacked en route to the landfill.

In the meantime, used nuclear fuel, some of it decades old, languishes in holding tanks. Oddly, it is up to a million times more radioactive than when it was fresh. While in the reactor, it began mutating into elements heavier than enriched uranium, such as isotopes of plutonium and americium.

That process continues in the waste dumps, where used hot rods exchange neutrons and expel alpha and beta particles, gamma rays, and heat. If humans suddenly departed, before long the water in the cooling ponds would boil and evaporate away—rather quickly in the Arizona desert. As the used fuel in the storage racks is exposed to air, its heat would ignite the cladding of the fuel rods, and radioactive fire would break out. At Palo Verde, like other reactors, the spent-fuels building was intended to be temporary, not a tomb, and its masonry roof is more similar to a big-box discount store’s than to the reactor’s pre-stressed containment Reloading nuclear fuel: Unit 3, Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. dome. Such a roof wouldn’t last long with a radioactive fire cooking below it, and much contamination would escape. But that wouldn’t be the biggest problem.

Resembling giant enoki mushrooms, Palo Verde’s great steam columns rise a mile over the desert creosote flats, each consisting of 15,000 gallons of water evaporated per minute to cool Palo Verde’s three fission reactors. (As Palo Verde is the only U.S. plant not on a river, bay, or seacoast, the water is recycled Phoenix effluent.) With 2,000 employees to keep pumps from sticking, gaskets from leaking, and filters back-washed, the plant is a town big enough to have its own police and fire departments.

Suppose its inhabitants had to evacuate. Suppose they had enough advance warning to shut down by jamming all the moderating rods into each reactor core to stop the reaction and cease generating electricity. Once Palo Verde was unmanned, its connection to the power grid would automatically be cut. Emergency generators with a seven-day diesel supply would kick in to keep coolant water circulating, because even if fission in the core stopped, uranium would continue to decay, generating about 7 percent as much heat as an active reactor. That heat would be enough to keep pressurizing the cooling water looping through the reactor core. At times, a relief valve would open to release overheating water, then close again when the pressure dropped. But the heat and pressure would build again, and the relief valve would have to repeat its cycle.

At some point, it becomes a question of whether the water supply is depleted, a valve sticks, or the diesel pumps cut out first. In any case, cooling water will cease being replenished. Meanwhile, the uranium fuel, which takes 704 million years to lose just half its radioactivity, is still hot. It keeps boiling off the 45 feet of water in which it sits. In a few weeks at the most, the top of the reactor core will be exposed, and the meltdown will begin.

If everyone had vanished or fled with the plant still producing electricity, it would keep running until any one of thousands of parts monitored daily by maintenance personnel failed. A failure should automatically trigger a shutdown; if it didn’t, the meltdown might occur quite quickly. In 1979 something similar happened at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island Plant when a valve stuck open. Within two hours and 15 minutes, the top of the core was exposed and turned into lava. As it flowed to the bottom of the reactor vessel, it started burning through six inches of carbon steel.

It was a third of the way through before anyone realized. Had no one discovered the emergency, it would have dropped into the basement, and 5,000 F molten lava would have hit nearly three feet of water flooded from the stuck valve, and exploded.

Nuclear reactors have far less concentrated fissionable material than nuclear bombs, so this would have been a steam explosion, not a nuclear explosion. But reactor containment domes aren’t designed for steam explosions; as its doors and seams blow out, a rush of incoming air would immediately ignite anything handy.

If a reactor was near the end of its 18-month refueling cycle, a meltdown to lava would be more likely, because months of decay build up considerable heat. If the fuel was newer, the outcome might be less catastrophic, though ultimately just as deadly. Lower heat might cause a fire instead of a meltdown. If combustion gases shattered the fuel rods before they turned to liquid, uranium pellets would scatter, releasing their radioactivity inside the containment dome, which would fill with contaminated smoke.

Containment domes are not built with zero leakage. With power off and its cooling system gone, heat from fire and fuel decay would force radioactivity out gaps around seals and vents. As materials weathered, more cracks would form, seeping poison, until the weakened concrete gave way and radiation gushed forth.

If everyone on Earth disappeared, 441 nuclear plants, several with multiple reactors, would briefly run on autopilot until, one by one, they overheated. As refueling schedules are usually staggered so that some reactors generate while others are down, possibly half would burn, and the rest would melt. Either way, the spilling of radioactivity into the air, and into nearby bodies of water, would be formidable, and it would last, in the case of enriched uranium, into geologic time. Those melted cores that flow to the reactor floors would not, as some believe, bore through the Earth and out the other side, emerging in China like poisonous volcanoes. As the radioactive lava melds with the surrounding steel and concrete, it would finally cool—if that’s the term for a lump of slag that would remain mortally hot thereafter.

That is unfortunate, because deep self-interment would be a blessing to whatever life remained on the surface. Instead, what briefly was an exquisitely machined technological array would have congealed into a deadly, dull metallic blob: a tombstone to the intellect that created it—and, for thousands of years thereafter, to innocent non-human victims that approach too closely.

Hot Living

They began approaching within a year. Chernobyl’s birds disappeared in the firestorm when Reactor Number Four blew that April, their nest building barely begun. Until it detonated, Chernobyl was almost halfway to becoming the biggest nuclear complex on Earth, with a dozen one-megawatt reactors. Then, one night in 1986, a collision of operator and design mistakes achieved a kind of critical mass of human error. The explosion, although not nuclear—only one building was damaged— broadcast the innards of a nuclear reactor over the landscape and into the sky, amid an immense cloud of radioactive steam from the evaporated coolant. To Russian and Ukrainian scientists that week, frantically sampling to track radioactive plumes through the soil and aquifers, the silence of a birdless world was unnerving.

But the following spring the birds were back, and they’ve stayed. To watch barn swallows zip naked around the carcass of the hot reactor is discombobulating, especially when you are swaddled in layers of wool and hooded canvas coveralls to block alpha particles, with a surgical cap and mask to keep plutonium dust from your hair and lungs. You want them to fly away, fast and far. At the same time, it’s mesmerizing that they’re here.

It seems so normal, as if apocalypse has turned out to be not so bad after all. The worst happens, and life still goes on.

Life goes on, but the baseline has changed. A number of swallows hatch with patches of albino feathers. They eat insects, fledge, and migrate normally. But the following spring, no white-flecked birds return. Were they too genetically deficient to make the winter circuit to southern Africa? Does their distinctive coloring make them unappealing to potential mates, or too noticeable to predators?

In the aftermath of Chernobyl’s explosion and fire, coal miners and subway crews tunneled underneath Number Four’s basement and poured a second concrete slab to stop the core from reaching groundwater. This probably was unnecessary, as the meltdown was over, having ended in a 200-ton puddle of frozen, murderous ooze at the bottom of the unit. During the two weeks it took to dig, workers were handed bottles of vodka, which, they were told, would inoculate them against radiation sickness.  It didn’t.

At the same time, construction began on a containment housing, something that all Soviet RMBK reactors like Chernobyl lacked, because they could be refueled faster without one. By then, hundreds of tons of hot fuel had already blown onto the roofs of adjacent reactors, along with 100 to 300 times the radiation released in the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima. Within seven years, radioactivity had eaten so many holes in the hastily built, hulking, gray five-story concrete shell, already patched and caulked like the hull of a rusting scow, that birds, rodents, and insects were nesting inside it. Rain had leaked in, and no one knew what vile brews steeped in puddles of animal droppings and warm, irradiated water. The Zone of Alienation, a 30-kilometer-radius evacuated circle around the plant, has become the world’s biggest nuclear-waste dump. The millions of tons of buried hot refuse include an entire pine forest that died within days of the blast, which couldn’t be burned because its smoke would have been lethal. The 10-kilometer radius around ground zero, the plutonium zone, is even more restricted. Any vehicles and machinery that worked there on the cleanup, such as the giant cranes towering over the sarcophagus, are too radioactive to leave.

Yet skylarks perch on their hot steel arms, singing. Just north of the ruined reactor, pines that have re-sprouted branch in elongated, irregular runs, with needles of various lengths. Still, they’re alive and green. Beyond them, by the early 1990s, forests that survived had filled with radioactive roe deer and wild boars. Then moose arrived, and lynx and wolves followed.

Dikes have slowed radioactive water, but not stopped it from reaching the nearby Pripyat River and, farther downstream, Kiev’s drinking supply. A railroad bridge leading to Pripyat, the company town where 50,000 were evacuated—some not quickly enough to keep radioactive iodine from ruining their though thyroids—is still too hot to cross. Four miles south, you can stand above the river in one of the best birding areas today in Europe, watching marsh hawks, black terns, wagtails, golden and white-tailed eagles, and rare black storks sail past dead cooling towers.

In Pripyat, an unlovely cluster of concrete 1970s high-rises, returning poplars, purple asters, and lilacs have split the pavement and invaded buildings. Unused asphalt streets sport a coat of moss. In surrounding villages, vacant except for a few aged peasants permitted to live out their shortened days here, stucco peels from brick houses engulfed by untrimmed shrubbery. Cottages of hewn timbers have lost roof tiles to tangles of wild grapevines and even birch saplings. Just beyond the river is Belarus; the radiation, of course, stopped for no border. During the five-day reactor fire, the Soviet Union seeded clouds headed east so that contaminated rain wouldn’t reach Moscow. Instead, it drenched the USSR’s richest breadbasket, 100 miles from Chernobyl at the intersection of Ukraine, Belarus, and western Russia’s Novozybkov region. Except for the 10-kilometer zone around the reactor, no other place received so much radiation—a fact concealed by the Soviet government lest national food panic erupt. Three years later, when researchers discovered the truth, most of Novozybkov was also evacuated, leaving fallow vast collective grain and potato fields.

The fallout, mainly cesium-137 and strontium-90, by-products of uranium fission with 30-year half-lives, will significantly irradiate Novozybkov’s soils and food chain until at least AD 2135. Until then, nothing here is safe to eat, for either humans or animals. What “safe” means is wildly debated. Estimates of the number of people who will die from cancer or blood and respiratory diseases due to Chernobyl range from 4,000 to 100,000. The lower figure comes from the International Atomic Energy Agency, whose credibility is tinged by its dual role as both the world’s atomic watchdog agency and the nuclear power industry’s trade association. The higher numbers are invoked by public health and cancer researchers and by environmental groups like Greenpeace International, all insisting that it’s too early to know, because radiation’s effects accumulate over time.

Whatever the correct measure of human mortality may be, it applies to other life-forms as well, and in a world without humans the plants and animals we leave behind will have to deal with many more Chernobyls. Little is still known about the extent of genetic harm this disaster unleashed:  genetically damaged mutants usually fall to predators before scientists can count them. However, studies suggest that the survival rate of Chernobyl swallows is significantly lower than that of returning migrants of the same species elsewhere in Europe.

“The worst-case scenario,” remarks University of South Carolina biologist Tim Mousseau, who visits here often, “is that we might see extinction of a species: a mutational meltdown.”

“Typical human activity is more devastating to biodiversity and abundance of local flora and fauna than the worst nuclear power plant disaster,” dourly observe radioecologists Robert Baker, of Texas Tech University, and Ronald Chesser, of the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, in another study. Baker and Chesser have documented mutations in the cells of voles in Chernobyl’s hot zone. Other research on Chernobyl’s voles reveals that, like its swallows, the life-spans of these rodents are also shorter than those of the same species elsewhere. However, they seem to compensate by sexually maturing and bearing offspring
earlier, so their population hasn’t declined.

If so, nature may be speeding up selection, upping the chances that somewhere in the new generation of young voles will be individuals with increased tolerance to radiation. In other words, mutations—but stronger ones, evolved to a stressed, changing environment.

Disarmed by the unexpected beauty of Chernobyl’s irradiated lands, humans have even tried to encourage nature’s hopeful bravado by reintroducing a legendary beast not seen in these parts for centuries: bison, brought from Belarus’s Belovezhskaya Pushcha, the relic European forest it shares with Poland’s Bialowieza Puszcza. So far, they’re grazing peacefully, even nibbling the bitter namesake wormwood—chornobyl in Ukrainian.

Whether their genes will survive the radioactive challenge will only be known after many generations. There may be more challenges: A new sarcophagus to enclose the old, useless one, isn’t guaranteed to last, either.

Eventually, when its roof blows away, radioactive rainwater inside and in adjacent cooling ponds could evaporate, leaving a new lode of radioactive dust for the burgeoning Chernobyl menagerie to inhale.

After the explosion, the radionuclide count was high enough in Scandinavia that reindeer were sacrificed rather than eaten. Tea plantations in Turkey were so uniformly dosed that Turkish tea bags were used in Ukraine to calibrate dosimeters. If, in our wake, we leave the cooling ponds of 441 nuclear plants around the world to dry and their reactor cores to melt and burn, the clouds enshrouding the planet will be far more insidious.

Meanwhile, we are still here. Not just animals but people too have crept back into Chernobyl’s and Novozybkov’s contaminated zones. Technically, they’re illegal squatters, but authorities don’t try very hard to dissuade the desperate or needy from gravitating to empty places that smell so fresh and look so clean, as long as no one checks those dosimeters. Most of them aren’t simply seeking free real estate. Like the swallows who returned, they come because they were here before. Tainted or not, it’s something precious and irreplaceable, even worth the risk of a shorter life.

It’s their home.

Last week Dr. Alexey Yablokov, co-author of  Chernobyl:  Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment emailed to thank and compliment for and on my ‘global radio-logical catastrophe’ article.  This meant a lot to me, as Alexey is THE top ‘all things nuclear’ mind on the planet.  At the beginning of this article I quote Dr. Immanuel Velikovsky, another brilliant Russian scientific mind uncompromised by fear or autocracy.

A couple weeks ago I also emailed Dr. Mark Sircus to thank him for his efforts to keep the nuclear thing on the public radar, but also guiding him to a clearer vision of the reality of the situation.  Here is my email to him:

“Mark…you might like to read my latest thing here:

‘Generation ‘F’:  How Humanity is Winning the War on Itself”

“The whole global nuclear thing cannot really be thought about or comprehended by our minds.  The scenario is THE primary example of how science and technology have advanced with a life of their own yet people in general are walking around with the exact same mentality as a thousand years ago.

Since the dawn of ‘civilization’ we have descended into an identification with matter and forgotten that we are essentially spiritual beings, that consciousness is primary and matter secondary.

We have been in denial of our spiritual nature for so long that now we’ve trashed our beautiful ‘Garden of Eden’ that served as our ‘laboratory of incarnation’ in which to learn and grow in the unique circumstance of spiritual beings inhabiting beautiful biological bodies on a beautiful Mother Earth.

We’ve neglected and denied the real reality for so long and actively participated in the damage to the Earth…’digging precious things from the land’ is really where it started…and our family of life that now, our collective karma is biting us in the ass.

Fukushima is pure karmic consequence.  Ultimately, we each come into this ‘life’ with a finite ‘life-span.’  In a spiritual society, ‘death’ is an illusion and is welcomed as a new journey, a celebration of remembrance and return to our origin in the consciousness of creativity and love, what the ancient Egyptians called ‘coming forth by day.’  What we call ‘death’ is really WAKING UP.

The shamanic initiation is about waking up at these levels while still in this body.  THIS IS WHERE HUMANITY IS AT RIGHT NOW.

We may well have already rendered the Earth uninhabitable for life as we know her beginning in the near future.  What does this mean karmically for each and every one of us?  What are the implications for the human experiment, for all other larger life-forms on Mother Earth?”

cheers and keep in touch jeff in nz

Here is Dr. Sircus’ response:

“Some solid thoughts and I will write an essay addressing his essay and will bring in your thoughts which pretty much equal mine. My intuitive calculations is that we will get about 10 percent of what the northern hemisphere is going to get….but ten percent of a civilization destroying planetary biosphere contamination is still huge… on the beach…..I am in the middle of the south american continent…in a valley….does not get any better and I would not lead my family underground…”

I had also suggested to Sircus that he communicate my ideas to his mate Mike Adams, the Natural News “health ranger” who has been keeping the nuclear thing alive as well, but not exactly telling it like it is.

I was somewhat shocked to read MY OWN WORDS in this posting from Dr. Sircus a few days later, yet with no reference to me.  MY words are in bold.

The creation, accumulation, “stock-piling” and dispersal of incomprehensibly astronomical quantities of synthetic radio-nuclides represents a planetary biological weapons system aimed right down the throat of humanity and its children. We have failed ourselves and we have certainly failed humanity’s children. We are robbing them of their future and this is one of the ugliest truths about us. You can clearly see the banks and top government officials around the world doing that financially, but when it comes to radiation contamination, it’s forever.

Immanuel Velikovsky wrote in his book, Earth in Upheaval, “Denial, omission, marginalization, disinformation and outright lies have surrounded every aspect of ‘the peaceful atom.’ In the wake of Fukushima, public relations, the engineering of consent, and reality-inversion have reached unprecedented levels of incredulity. The global mass-media apparatus continues to be instrumental in maintaining the ‘deafening silence’ on all things nuclear. Meanwhile, the radioactive fires rage on, bringing ‘hot particles’, cancer and mutation to every corner of the globe.”

This has been lifted straight out of my posting below:

As well, Immanuel Velikovsky (who died in 1979) said NONE of this…I did.  I’m not looking for ‘credit’ here but Sircus would do very well 1) to get his information straight and more importantly, 2) acknowledge where his information is coming from.  This is pure honesty and integrity in networking and journalism.  It can also be called ‘plagiarism’ but we won’t go there, not yet anyway.  I will also refrain from criticizing Sircus on his clinging to ‘religion’ instead of embracing inner spiritual strength and creativity.

In the past two or three weeks there’s been elevated levels of ‘news’ about Fukushima’s impending ‘threat to humanity’, due to the precariousness of the reactor and spent fuel pool of Building 4.  In the wake of Senator Wyden’s visit there, Fukushima has suddenly become an ‘international problem’ and U.S. ‘national security’ issue.  Duh?  It’s all quite suspicious.

As I reported in my posting from a week or two ago:

“A very small number of spent fuel rods contain enough plutonium to kill all human beings if ‘properly’ distributed; by reasonable estimates there have been HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUAL RODS that have rubbleized and/or vapourized since March 2011…THE SITUATION HAS BEEN AT ‘MASS EXTINCTION’ LEVEL SINCE THE FIRST WEEK AFTER IT BEGAN.  All we’re talking now is ASTRONOMICAL OVER-KILL LEVELS.  The southern hemisphere ultimately is no safer than the north, people here will just mutate and die slightly later.  But it’s not going to happen over-night…it might take a generation or two or three.”

To the point:  Mike Adams, Arnie Gunderson, Michio Kaku and others seem to be keeping us informed BUT the reality is that what they are talking about ALREADY HAPPENED IN THE FIRST WEEK OF THE FUKUSHIMA DISASTER.  With TWO SPENT FUEL POOLS VAPOURIZED back then, THIS was the ‘nail in the coffin of humanity’ if there has ever been one.  The deception or disinformation is that the collapse of building four and/or the destruction of its spent fuel pool will take it all TO ANOTHER LEVEL OF CONTAMINATION.  The reality is that this would in fact make it all much worse, another ‘nail’ if you will, but THAT NEXT LEVEL WAS ALREADY REACHED IN MARCH OF 2011.

Here are links to what these people have saying recently:

“I was chatting with David Rainoshek on Skype today, and he and I both agreed: the precarious Fukushima situation is, by far, the No. 1 threat facing humanity at this moment.

Of all the things going on — GMOs, fluoride, chemtrails, loss of topsoils, etc., — Fukushima is orders of magniture more immediate in terms of its threat to our continued way of life in the Northern hemisphere.

The mass cover-up of the Fukushima situation is being called Plume-Gate, and today’s feature story explains Plume-Gate in more detail:”

NOTE:  The ‘number one threat facing humanity’ is HUMANITY. Adams is also a regular co-host of the Alex Jones Show.

“There’s more cesium in that [Unit 4] fuel pool than in all 800 nuclear bombs exploded above ground…But of course it would happen all at once.  It would certainly destroy Japan as a functioning country…Move south of the equator if that ever happened, I think that’s probably the lesson there.”

NOTE:  For some reason I never trusted Gunderson.  He was, in fact, employed at Three Mile Island at some point (according to Ace Hoffman, during the TMI partial melt-down, the radiation recording chart was ‘taken off-line’ for an hour or two during the peak of the crisis), and has been involved in the operation of over 70 reactors.  To this day he is a ‘consultant’ to nuclear power.  Translation:  the nuclear industry pays him.  I think we can be sure that he’s not telling us the whole truth…not by a long shot.  According to Greenpeace, over 2000 atmospheric nuclear tests have been conducted, not 800.  There may be more cesium in building 4’s spent fuel pool than in ‘800 nuclear bombs’, but the PLUTONIUM is far more dangerous.  And what does ‘happen all at once’ mean?  A spent fuel pool collapsing is not really comparable to ‘800 nuclear bombs’ going off, and would be much worse in many ways, if only because it would be silent and invisible, with no explosions;  or it might be ‘better’ if your goal were to get rid of people without destroying infrastructure.

“People don’t realize that the Fukushima reactor is on a knife’s edge. It’s near the tipping point.  A small earthquake, another pipe break, another explosion, could tip it over and we could have a disaster much worse, many times worse than Chernobyl. It’s like a sleeping dragon.”

NOTE:  Can you really trust anyone who appears on David Letterman?  Remember, NBC is owned by General Electric.  Kaku tells us that “we need private enterprise, especially people with deep pockets to help jump start the program and maybe mining the heavens is just the ticket.”  Kaku, who is good mates with Ray Kurzweil, also believes that having micro-chips installed in EVERYTHING is a great idea, and that ‘transcendent man’ is our destiny.

Fukushima Fuel Pools Are an American National Security Issue

“After visiting Fukushima, Senator Ron Wyden warned that the situation was worse than reported … and urged Japan to accept international help to stabilize dangerous spent fuel pools.

An international coalition of nuclear scientists and non-profit groups are calling on the U.N. to coordinate a multi-national effort to stabilize the fuel pools. And see this.

Fuel pool number 4 is, indeed, the top short-term threat facing humanity.

Anti-nuclear physician Dr. Helen Caldicott says that if fuel pool 4 collapses, she will evacuate her family from Boston and move them to the Southern Hemisphere. This is an especially dramatic statement given that the West Coast is much more directly in the path of Fukushima radiation than the East Coast.”

To me, it’s quite strange and suspicious that NOW all of a sudden everyone is worried about building four when they SHOULD HAVE BEEN THIS WORRIED IN MARCH OF 2011.  To me it’s apparent that even these recent elevated attention levels are not only part of the on-going deception and ‘perception management’ program surrounding Fukushima, but are also part of yet another ‘hidden agenda’ at work, now that the UN is being called in…AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR…and the U.S. is calling it a ‘national security’ issue. THIS IS DANGEROUS: with the toppling of Building 4 being made out to be the ‘trigger’ for instant mass-death, another HAARP-induced quake could bring this to fruition at any time.  Then, the moment would be ripe for an all-out but covert radio-logical attack on Iran…the elevated levels of atmospheric radio-nuclides could be blamed on Building 4.

And when the incubus of ‘national security’ is invited into bed, the sky is the limit and ALL ROADS LEAD TO…

Believe it or not, this is actually the title of a book from the 1970’s by Arthur Tamplin and Dr. John Gofman, who was a principal biologist for the Manhattan Project.  Gofman had already extensively researched the massive increase in cancer rates from medical radiology before his Manhattan days. Radiology is another seldom-mentioned HUGE source of ionising radiation, and therefore carcinogenesis and mutagenesis in the human environment.  Gofman would have been mates with General Leslie Groves, project director of Manhattan and honorary recipient of what has come to be called the “Groves Memorandum”, a top-secret ‘wish list’ for the uses of radio-logical materials as biological weapons.

In a recent article ‘radchick’ Christina Consolo makes some very good points about the global nuclear scenario.

Although she’s not ‘connecting all the dots’, a common theme seems to emerge from her many varied observations:  time after time, it looks EXACTLY as if EVERY thing that is done or ISN’T done, every decision that is made, with respect to Fukushima, is designed to EXACERBATE AND MAXIMIZE THE RADIATON DAMAGE LEVELS, almost to the point of having been scientifically and strategically calculated.

Read my note to Christina here in which I ‘connect the dots.’

“Christina…EXCELLENT work you’re doing, and I just read your latest article on Fukushima.  Just a couple comments…[our nuclear problems] didn’t begin with Fukushima but with Trinity.  If you read the Groves memorandum, they spell out the use of ‘nuclear pollution’ disseminated into the biosphere as a biological weapon.  This is what the whole nuclear industry has really been about all along.  Fukushima was not an ‘accident’ or ‘natural disaster’ but a deliberately engineered false-flag industrial catastrophe, in a sequence with 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the quakes in Haiti and Christchurch, not to mention many more.  The technology and mentality exists and SAYS SO IN THEIR OWN WORDS to do these things.  The reasons are the same two reasons that the international banking cartel backed the Third Reich, and has made Amerika into the Nazi Germany of today:  1)  total global hegemony and resource control  2) radical depopulation & social control.  Leuren Moret pointed out that when Obama got ‘elected’, Bill Clinton introduced him on live tv saying to the American public, ‘Obama’s going to be your executioner.’

I personally believe there are occult motivations behind the continuous mass-murders that go on all the time…a ‘secret mentality’ where the Kabbalistic Zionist [cf. ‘sacrifice of the lesser brethren’ doctrine], Thule Society, Skull & Bones and Bilderbergers meet.  I think THEY might actually hold as true whatever their demented beliefs and aspirations are, but in REALITY it’s just another dimension of human delusion, schizophrenia and megalomania.  This is nothing new in the history of civilization; what IS new is that now, tiny groups of psychopaths can control new forms of technology that can wreak almost universal destruction with ‘plausible deniability.’

An atomic bomb or missile can be traced to its origin, but a giant burst of intense micro-waves from HAARP-like technologies is much harder to trace, and can be ‘plausibly attributed’ to solar flares, for example.  This is a HUGE area right now, if you pay attention to what’s happening with the sun, what NASA et al. are ‘telling’ us is happening with the sun, the levels of new technology and operation that the whole global HAARP-related grid is under-going.  HAARP is capable of generating a ‘nuclear explosion without the radiation’;  ‘global warming’ is a cover for the atmospheric heating caused by HAARP-related technologies.

Ultimately, ALL OF THIS is not about eating the right foods or moving south of the equator…it’s about WAKING UP TO WHAT IT REALLY MEANS TO BE A HUMAN BEING instead of sleep-walking zombie and FACING UP TO WHAT HAS COMMONLY BEEN THOUGHT OF AS ‘DEATH’…INDIVIDUALLY AND COLLECTIVELY.  It’s not something to be afraid of, but our centuries of ‘demonization’ of ‘death’ and everything else we don’t like to think about has CAUSED US TO MAKE SURE IT HAS NOW MANIFESTED IN HARD-CORE PHYSICAL REALITY.  it didn’t have to happen this way but IT’S HERE NOW.

We are eternal spiritual beings inhabiting material biological vehicles, ‘sacred temples’ is what we are and what Mother Earth is.  We have grossly denied these realities to the point of blatant self-destruction.  Fukushima and many other processes are pure karma that we have inflicted on ourselves.  “What we do to the Earth, we do to ourselves.”  Chief Seattle.  The ancient Egyptians believed that THIS world is the ‘duat’, the ‘netherworld’ through which each of us must pass on the sacred journey of life.  When we reach the end, we cross the river and meet with Osiris, the ruler of eternity, and he ‘judges’ each soul based on what they have done or not done in this life.  This is based on the symbolic ‘weight of the heart.’  If the heart is heavy from spiritual darkness, the soul is abandoned to oblivion and ceases to exist;  if the heart is light or in balance, then the soul gets to ‘come forth by day’ (the Egyptian phrase for ‘death’) and enter a realm of eternity under the guidance of Osiris.  I am not religious but I believe there is a lot of real truth in this kind of belief.  Since we are primarily consciousness, this is going to continue after we ‘die’…to me, this is a given.  What humanity is doing is making sure that we have no more ‘laboratory of incarnation’ to return to in future generations of biological humanity, possibly FORCING ourselves to become wholly spiritual and beings of consciousness…or else, not to exist at all?  cheers jeff

When confronted with solid evidence of a scientifically premeditated depopulation agenda, many people ask ‘But who would do this?”  Here is the answer:

“The Brotherhood of Death”, William Engdahl, from Seeds of Destruction

“Years before Henry Kissinger and Brent Scowcroft made population reduction the official foreign policy of the United States Government, the Rockefeller brothers, in particular John D. Rockefeller III, or JDR III as we was affectionately known, were busy experimenting on human guinea pigs…JDR III made Puerto Rico into a huge laboratory to test his ideas on mass population control beginning in the 1950’s.”

“Investigations by EIR have uncovered a planning apparatus operating outside the control of the White House whose sole purpose is to reduce the world’s population by 2 billion people through war, famine, disease and any other means necessary. This apparatus, which includes various levels of the government is determining U.S. foreign policy. In every political hotspot – El Salvador, the so-called arc of crisis in the Persian Gulf, Latin America, Southeast Asia and in Africa – the goal of U.S. foreign policy is population reduction.”

Add in people like John Holdren, Obama’s top science advisor:

“In a recent hearing of the Senate Commerce Committee, Chairman John D. Rockefeller IV refers to John Holdren as ‘walking on water’- inferring on the current science czar a saint-like status and reaffirming Rockefeller’s admiration of anyone pushing the depopulation agenda his family has propagated for the better part of the 20th century. In the current century, it seems, the family is no less committed to its age-old objectives.”

To close the circle on the current and not-so-covert depopulation agenda, which is the sole over-riding purpose of both ‘American foreign policy’ and the Pentagon and military-industrial complex as a whole, read about the Atlantic Council, a D.C.-based ‘think tank’ who appears to be one of the biggest heads of the hydra.  In this article Felicity Arbuthnot pulls together many pieces of the mosaic relating the depopulation agenda, neo-Nazi mentalities of today, complicity of major military and industrial players, the ‘fraternity of fascism’, Orwellian euphemism, and, of course, the wry sense of ‘humour’ shared by the elite over-lords as they envision their world of tomorrow.  Their ‘Humanitarian Awards’ is like an Academy Awards of Depopulation.

Humanitarian Awards are surely taking on a whole new meaning. The end of April brought the obscenity of the announcement that Madeleine Albright, a woman prepared to sacrifice children by proxy was to be awarded America’s highest honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for her role as a long time champion of democracy and human rights all over the world.

In the same twenty four hours, an announcement was made that Britain’s Prince Harry is to receive a special award for his ‘humanitarian work.’

The ‘Distinguished Humanitarian Leadership’ award: ‘recognizes outstanding achievement’ and is presented annually by the Atlantic Council. Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William, have been jointly nominated, with Prince Harry travelling to Washington to accept on behalf of both, on 7th May.

Madeleine Albright’s latest honour for her services to humanity, has been awarded to others who compete admirably with her dedication. They include such peerless war mongers as Henry Kissinger, Donald Rumsfeld, General Colin Powell, whose pack of lies to the United Nations (February 2003) initiated Iraq’s destruction – and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair whose offices and officers provided those lies.

That human dove of peace, Dick Cheney has been a recipient, as has his Israeli counterpart, Shimon Perez and General Norman ‘No one left to kill’ Schartzkopf, to name a few.”

Fellow recipient of the Award with Albright is Bob Dylan. Funny world…

Sponsors of this peaceful and freedom loving establishment run in to several pages but include the US Departments of the Air Force, Navy, Defence and Energy, and Los Alamos National Laboratory which brought the world the atomic bombs, dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. In the October of that year the Laboratory received the “Army-Navy ‘E” Award” for “excellence in production.”

Another sponsor is the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory whose development aimed originally to: ‘spur innovation and provide competition to nuclear weapons design at Los Alamos.’ It also brought the world the Polaris nuclear armed submarine.

NATO and Lockheed Martin are on the roll of honour, as Raytheon and SAIC ($2.6 Billion in trade with the Department of Defence in 2003, year of the invasion of Iraq.) SAIC’s Management team include Bill Clinton, a clutch of former US Defence Secretaries and former UN Iraq Weapons Inspector David Kay, who continued his fruitless hunt for Iraq’s non-existent weapons of mass destruction after the Iraq invasion, when the US-UK coalition was using them.

General Dynamics is at the table, so to speak, as is Boeing and Dow Chemical, which swallowed up Union Carbide, which brought the world the 1984 Bhopal disaster. Exact casualty numbers have never been established relating to Bhopal, but upper figures are fifteen thousand dead and over half a million medically affected, still ongoing.

These ‘people’ and corporations are the ‘crème-de-la-crème’ of the mac-daddies of destruction and depopulation, including Heinrich Kissinger, who actually worked with Hitler, and drafted the official U.S. depopulation strategy; Dick Cheney, master-mind of 9/11; Donald Rumsfeld, also master-mind of 9/11, involved with aspartame and vaccines;  the U.S. Navy, world’s greatest threat to whales and dolphins AND world’s biggest producer of radio-active waste AND prime operator of HAARP; Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon, top developers, manufacturers and operators of the most advanced high-tech ‘sci-fi’ weapons systems in existence; and good old General Dynamics, one of if not THE largest manufacturer of DU (‘depleted uranium’) weapons on the planet.

“350,000 people will have to be eliminated every day in order to sustain the planet. It’s a terrible thing to say but somebody has to say it.” Dr. Jacques Cousteau

“DU weapons are doing good job now to sustain the planet. Many countries have now begun manufacturing weapons cased in depleted uranium. Billions of dollars allotted to around the world for cleaning up nuclear waste sites is now being used to ship nuclear waste…to munitions manufacturers all over the world to be ‘recycled’ into weapons.”

I wonder if the Atlantic Council members and sponsors are already on Ray Kurzweil’s ‘Become a Transcendent Man in 12 Easy Steps’ Program.  After all, ‘transcendent man’ won’t be adversely affected by ionising radiation on this planet…or any other.

Finally, if you’re thinking of escaping ‘south of the border’ a la Mark Sircus, Arnie Gunderson, and Helen Caldicott…but not until building four collapses, and not a minute sooner…remember the book On the Beach by Nevil Shute.  The nuclear ‘survivors’ down under actually suffered more because they lived a little longer.

SOYLENT GREEN (for a look at post-nuclear cuisine)

from “Generation ‘F’: How Humanity is Winning the War on Itself” Jeff Phillips

“Geneticists in Rachel Carson’s day told us that at least 25 generations of humans must be studied before the full effects of synthetic mutagens could be understood.  Based on biology as we know it, the prospects are grim, with respect to the global radio-logical scenario alone; add in the long-term morbidity/mortality coefficients for chemical, GE/GMO, EMR, environmental destruction, ‘weather warfare’, urbanization and institutionalised unreality initiatives, to name only a few, and the question becomes, ‘How much longer do we have?’

In the real world, where matter is created by consciousness, the transition from ‘this life’ to whatever comes next is not an escape into nothingness nor a bogey-man constellation of fear and uncertainty to live in denial of, but a new journey, a celebration of awakening, of remembering our origin in the light of eternal creative love, at least if we’ve lived life consciously.

Our future is uncertain and unknown; ‘death’ is not what happens when we pass from ‘this life’ but simply the denial of consciousness.  A collective and concerted intent and effort towards even a minimal but positive spiritual renavigation could be the spark that ignites a billion lumps of gray matter to become a unified field of creative consciousness, and grants the spirit of Mother Earth some momentary relief.

Consciousness, creativity, love…these are eternal; ‘death’ is the illusion of identification with matter.  It’s possible to ‘die’ to our out-moded and pathological MOE’s, or ‘mental operating environments’ and, in the words of the ancient Egyptians, to ‘come forth by day’…to awaken to the beauty of infinity.

Throughout history shamanic initiations have provided such opportunities for the chosen individual; providence notwithstanding, cosmic necessity is currently forcing a collective initiation on humanity as a whole, whether we like it or not.”

If we pass the test we may be able to experience a collective ‘coming forth by day’.  If we fail, I am not sure what the options would be.

“Great catastrophes of the past accompanied by electrical discharges and followed by radioactivity could have produced sudden and multiple mutations of the kind achieved today by experimenters, but on an immense scale.  The past of mankind, and of the plant and animal kingdoms, too, must now be viewed in the light of the experience of Hiroshima and no longer from the portholes of the Beagle.”

Immanuel Velikovsky, Earth in Upheaval, chapter 15, “Cataclysmic Evolution”

In recent years military strategists have shifted from nuclear to technetronic* weapons, a leap as great as that from gunpowder to atom bombs.  The  creation and accumulation, the ‘stock-piling’ and dispersal of incomprehensibly astronomical quantities of synthetic radio-nuclides represents a planetary biological weapons system exceeded in scale and intensity only by extra-terrestrially-originating catastrophes our planet has experienced throughout her long history.

On the ‘grand chessboard’ of today, major players are able covertly to create ‘climate disruption’ which is blamed on ‘global warming’, or to create earth-quakes which may destroy a city and/or industrial installation, giving the appearance of a ‘natural disaster’ and releasing massive global radio-logical warfare, in the case of Fukushima.  In his own limited way, humanity deploys his most advanced technologies in order to ‘emulate the gods’ of cosmic death and destruction;  this much we know.  The mystery is…why?

Denial, omission, marginalisation, disinformation and outright lies have surrounded every aspect of ‘the peaceful atom.’  In the wake of Fukushima, public relations, the engineering of consent, and reality-inversion have reached unprecedented levels of incredulity.  The global mass-media apparatus continues to be instrumental in maintaining the ‘deafening silence’ on all things nuclear.  Meanwhile, the radio-active fires rage on, bringing ‘hot particles’, cancer and mutation to every corner of the globe.

Dr. Mark Sircus is one of the few activists striving to keep the nuclear scenario on the screen of public radar.  I have commended him, but also tried to provide a more realistic appraisal of the actual situation.

His latest article “Fukushima on Steroids”

“Mark…good on you bro for keeping the radiation thing on the radar and for being more realistic about what is really going on.  I have no desire to make people freak out or panic BUT the reality of what is going on is at that level.  If anything, we should have paniced and freaked out long ago, when we could still do something about it.  NOW the whole nuclear thing has been metastasizing for over 60 years and when you step back, realize what it IS and how MUCH of it there is, it really seems that all along the whole thing has been designed to terminate biological life on this planet.  I am exploring all this more, but when you look at the connections between the ‘occult’ aspects of the Third Reich AND the people who backed them…the international bankers, the connections with secret ‘death cults’ like Skull and Bones, which MANY of these decision-makers have been involved with, including Henry Stimson, the person who got Truman to drop the bomb on Japan, that GE had directors in America and Nazi Germany at the same time and THEY designed the original reactors and were probably involved in where they were built…the idea of putting the spent fuel pools ON TOP OF THE REACTOR is like a built-in guarantee of future disaster.  Think about it.  Dennis Cuddy and others have investigated the ‘resurrection’ of the Third Reich in the form of ‘successors’ who appear to be men of power and wealth but are connected by secret agendas…does the Bilderberger Group come to mind?  Their single biggest agenda, like that of the Nazis, is the twin goal of domination and depopulation, global hegemony and high-tech ‘eugenics.’ “

Top CEO’s with Obama in Brazil when Fukushima Happened

Obama just happened to be in Brazil for the first two weeks of the Fukushima disaster, when released radiation levels were believed to be at their highest, along with the CEO’s of several corporations with very direct ties to the heart of the nuclear industry, including Jeffrey Immelt (GE), Aris Candris (Westinghouse), James T. Hackett (Andadarko), and Anthony S. Harrington (Albright-Stonebridge Group)GE and Westinghouse are the premier designers of reactors and warheads;  GE reactors exploded at Fukushima.  Anadarko owns Kerr-McGee, the notorious plutonium reprocessing company.  Madeline Albright was secretary of state under Clinton who proclaimed that the death of half a million Iraqi children due to U.S. sanctions was ‘acceptable.’

NOTE:  This disaster, as well as others (Christchurch quake, Haiti quake, BP-Gulf, Hurricane Katrina) ALL show CLEAR SIGNATURES of having been purposively engineered.  It’s the ‘next generation’ of ‘full-spectrum war-fighting’ and the enemy is life as we know her.  THIS IS THE AGENDA OF THE MIC AND THE BANKERS.
Read my articles in the latest issue of Uncensored

Last week I received an autographed copy of Chernobyl:  Consequences for the People and the Environment from Dr. Alexey Yablokov.  He is the TOP researcher who understands what Fukushima means for life on this planet.  In his book is the ONLY presentation of the reality and complexity of radio-nuclide dissemination disasters I know of, for example, the totally unexpected behaviour of some isotopes of tellurium and americum; Fukushima is astronomically vaster than Chernobyl in both complexity and quantity of substances released and continually being created and disseminated as I write this.

The figures about the total amounts of radiation being reported are WAY TOO LOW and misleading as well.  First, the leading edge of research from Oak Ridge N.L. (Gauld et. al) tells us that at least 1946 synthetic radio-nuclides exist from fission reactions, EACH of which has a unique half-life as well as numerous and highly radio-active daughter products, each with different half-lives; this is under controlled circumstances, which Fukushima is NOT.  The radio-nuclide situation there is far more complex and unknown because of numerous interactions going on that have never happened before.

Hiroshima alone released 1.2 Mega Curies all at once with a 30 kilo-ton explosion. Rating nuclear detonations in terms of ‘tons of tnt’, which is what ‘kilo-tons’ means is totally misleading, as this is ONLY the blast power and tells NOTHING about the radiation release.

The figure of ’85 times the radiation of Chernobyl’ is a gross under-estimate…it’s probably closer to 10,000 Chernobyls for several reasons:

1) Fukushima has 3 total meltdowns so far, maybe more, with another likely to happen; 14 reactors in total in the vicinity are damaged.

2) Fukushima has permanently contaminated the entire Pacific ocean by sheer proximity and by using sea-water

3) At Chernobyl no spent fuel pools were destroyed…at Fukushima two spent fuel pools burned up in the first week (massive explosions blew the tops off the buildings, NOT ‘hydrogen’ explosions but atomic, according to Dr. Chris Busby).

A fourth pool is believed TO ALREADY HAVE LOST ITS WATER MONTHS AGO, was already on fire as early as the first days of the disaster, and is now emitting huge white clouds as of today (2 May 2012).  This building, 4, has not collapsed yet but if the water is leaking or gone the assemblies have been irradiating into the atmosphere since then.

SEE PHOTOS HERE:  I personally do not believe that intact spent fuel pools are likely to exist inside this rubble…maybe in Building Four?

Check this article for a discussion of why at least two spent fuel pools have been long gone:

“Failure to keep adequate water levels in a pool would lead to a catastrophic fire, said nuclear experts, some of whom think that unit 1’s pool may now be outside.”

Asahi Flyover: “No spent fuel pool seen in Reactor No. 3 — SFP ‘must’ be in center of screen, however we can’t see any of it…”

“Now we are zooming the 5th floor of reactor 3, where the fuel storage pool is. We must be able to see the top of the fuel storage pool at the very place. There “must” be the fuel storage pool in the center of the screen. However, we can not see even a part of the pool from the sky.”

4) ALL spent fuel assemblies contain plutonium (plutonium is created as a fuel rod fissions and remains in there after it is removed from the reactor) but at Fukushima, MOX fuel rods containing plutonium were in use and fresh ones had just been installed before March of 2011.

A very small number of spent fuel rods contain enough plutonium to kill all human beings if ‘properly’ distributed; by reasonable estimates there have been HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUAL RODS that have rubbleized and/or vapourized since March 2011.

Purely logically and observationally, we KNOW that massive explosions destroyed the insides of buildings one and three…what is the probability that the spent fuel pools remained undamaged?

1)  50 tons in pool, 400 ass. in core*, 292 ass. in pool**
2)  81 tons in pool, 548 ass. in core*, 587 ass. in pool
3)  88 tons in pool, 548 ass. in core*, 514 ass. in pool (32 mox)**
4)  135 tons in pool, 0 in core, 1479 ass. in pool
5)  142 tons in pool, 418 ass. in core, 946 ass. in pool (?)
6)  151 tons in pool, 634 ass. in core, 867 ass. in pool

ass. = fuel rod assemblies

** rubbleized/vapourized long ago

The cores of reactors 1, 2 and 3 have ‘left the building’ months ago. The cores of 1 and 3 were blasted apart; their remains and the core of 2 are headed down towards a probable hydro-volcanic explosion scenario.

The spent fuel pools of reactors 1 and 3 ARE GONE, blasted into the air long ago.

Fukushima: Find the corium? Maybe in a few thousand years or so

“Corium is a lava-like molten mixture of portions of nuclear reactor core, formed during a nuclear meltdown, the most severe class of a nuclear reactor accident.

It consists of nuclear fuel, fission products, control rods, structural materials from the affected parts of the reactor, products of their chemical reaction with air, water and steam, and, in case the reactor vessel is breached, molten concrete from the floor of the reactor room.

In the case of Fukushima, the corium melted out of the reactors, probably the first day. It has been estimated to be 30-40 ft under the reactors, although this topic has been extensively debated.

There are 3 corium blobs, between 100-150 tons in size, at a temperature of approximately 3000 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course no one really this precisely, since humans/robots/cameras can’t get near it without dying or breaking.”

And here is a fantastic new e-book with HEAPS OF SHOCKING INFORMATION:

Nuclear Crimes

And HERE are links to down-load THE TWO MOST ESSENTIAL BOOKS ANYONE NEEDS to truly understand what is going on with the global radiation scenario:

The Code Killers by Ace Hoffman

This is a FANTASTIC and highly visual resource, the whole book is charts and graphs…he tells us that the typical reactor has 1000 tons of fuel in it, for example…and contains roughly 1.5 GigaCuries, or 5.6 x 10 to the 19th Becquerels…this is ONE reactor core.  [NOTE:  remember that Hiroshima was 1.5 MegaCuries, or a thousand times less than this = a typical reactor core contains a thousand times more radiation than one Hiroshima explosion]

Pu239  well-known form of plutonium, used in bombs and reactors, half-life of 24,000 years…lethal down to a microgram [Helen Caldicott estimates that 500 TONS of this are produced in reactors each year]

Pu238  used as heat source for power generation by NASA, CIA…half-life of 87 years, is 280 times MORE carcinogenic than Pu239 [Karl Grossman would know how many tons of this might be in orbit right now, ref. The Wrong Stuff: The Space Program’s Nuclear Threat To Our Planet]”

Chernobyl:  Consequences for the People and the Environment, A. Yablokov and Nesterenko

How many radio-nuclides spread over the world?...No one knows for certain, but estimates vary from 50 x 10 to the 6th Ci, or approx. 4-5% of the total radio-nuclides released from the reactor, to the reactor being essentially empty and more than 10  x 10 to the 9th Ci dispersed over the globe…”

“No fewer than 3 billion persons inhabit areas contaminated by Chernobyl’s radio-nuclides.”

“Until now the spotty/uneven distribution of the Chernobyl radioactive fallout has attracted too little attention.  Aerogamma studies, upon which most maps of contamination are based, give only average values of radioactivity for 200-400 meters of a route, so small, local highly radioactive ‘hot spots’ can exist without being marked.”

Problems with Americium-241  The powerful alpha-emitter Am-241, formed as a result of the natural disintegration of Pu241, is a very important factor in the increasing levels of contamination in many areas located up to 1,000 kms from Chernobyl NPP. The territory contaminated by Pu today, where the level of alpha radiation is usually low, will again become dangerous as a result of the future disintegration of Pu-241 to Am-241 in the ensuing tens and even hundreds of years.  An additional danger of Am-241 is its higher solubility and consequent mobility into ecosystems compared with Pu.” (p.24)

“…helicopters dumped 2,400 tons of lead (Pb) into the reactor; according to other data, the figure was 6,720 tons…Pb contamination added to radiation causes harm to living organisms.  Ionizing radiation causes biochemical oxidation of free radicals in cells.  Under the influence of heavy metals these reactions proceed especially intensively.”

“…some radio-nuclides, which result in much higher levels of radiation than that due to Cs-137…include Cl-36 and Te-99 with half-lives of nearly 30,000 years and 21,000 years, respectively…the latter isotopes cause very low levels of radiation, but it will persist for many millenia…the number of people who were exposed to additional radiation at a level higher than 2.5 x 10 to the minus 2 mSv might be more than 4.7 billion and at a level higher than o.4 mSv more than 605 million.”

Obstacles to Analysis of the Chernobyl Consequences

1)  official secrecy

2)  lack of detailed and clearly reliable medical data

3)  “Difficulties in estimating true individual radioactive doses in view of a) reconstruction of doses in the first days, weeks and months after the catastrophe;  b)  uncertainty as to the influence of individual ‘hot particles’;  c)  problems accounting for uneven and spotty contamination;  d)  inability to determine the influence of each of many radio-nuclides, singly and in combination

4)  inadequacy of modern knowledge as to a)  the specific effect of each of the many radio-nuclides; b)  synergy of interactions of radio-nuclides among themselves and with other environmental factors;  c)  population and individual variations in radio-sensitivity; d)  impact of ultra-low doses [NOTE:  PETKAU EFFECT] and dose rates;  e)  impact of internally absorbed radiation on various organs and biological systems.

Mutation loads and mutation rates in plants, animals and microorganisms in the Chernobyl-contaminated territories are much higher than elsewhere.  Chronic low-dose exposure to Chernobyl radiation has resulted in trans-generational accumulation of genomic instability…In the contaminated territories there are also active processes of natural selection for the survival of less radio-sensitive individuals – the process of radio-adaptation…[which] in a population under conditions of chronic contamination will lead to diminish radio-sensitivity over many generations and evolutionary theory predicts that this will result because of special adaptation accompanied by elimination of sensitive geno-types and pauperization of the gene poolSome plants and animals demonstrate a return to historically atavistic, primitive types of genetic systems…considering the short life-span of a generation of micro-organisms, this rapid micro-evolutionary process can lead to activation of more primitive life-forms as well as to the occurrence of new forms of viruses, bacteria and fungi…More than 70% of all experimental rats raised under conditions of Chernobyl contamination developed cancer within the next few years and suffered multiple other diseases and impaired immunological competence.” (p.286)

Chernobyl was one reactor that exploded; Fukushima has 2 reactors that exploded, 3 molten cores in the ground, at least two more reactors in melt-down, a total of at least 14 reactors in trouble, and at least 2 spent fuel pools containing thousands of fuel assemblies and hundreds of thousands of fuel rods that have blasted into rubble and vapourized, releasing and mobilizing thousands of kilograms of plutonium, among hundreds of other highly dangerous radio-nuclides.

Perhaps as many as 1,000 or more OTHER reactors remain in operation today, all over the world, on land, in the ocean and in space, with hundreds more under construction.  Uranium mining continues unabated.

Mitsui Chemical Plant Explosions, Still Burning

I reckon what’s happened at the ‘chemical’ plant…called a ‘glue factory’ but known to be a radio-active waste depository with over 3000 containers of DU and who knows what else…that’s been burning is this:  unless it was deliberately sabotaged (remember, massive evidence exists that Fukushima was not a NATURAL disaster), there is a good possibility that they’ve been bringing massive amounts of radio-active waste, debris, water, whatever will go into containers from Fukushima and storing it there WITH ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA OF HOW HIGH THE RADIATION LEVELS ACTUALLY ARE.  Just like in the original ‘atomic piles’ when you stack a bunch of radio-active materials together closely, weird things start to happen…like ‘prompt criticality’…which is the chain-reaction leading to fission. I believe that this is what started to happen at that plant a long time ago…weird flashes of blue light just like they saw at Fukushima…fission reactions started happening in the waste drums.  They were already trying to shut down and evacuate the plant when the explosions and fires started, so they knew something was going on.  With all this stuff on fire, it’s even WORSE than the incineration of the rubble and waste.

With the sudden rash of nuclear plant accidents and incidents in America in the last year, it really makes me wonder who is actually behind all this?  Humanity is behind it.  It all adds up to massive and actual ‘nuclear war without the explosions.’

A vast planetary burden of synthetic radio-nuclides already existed throughout the biosphere, including the bodies of plants and animals, resulting from the 2000+ atmospheric detonations, on-going releases (intentional and accidental) from reactor sites and processing facilities, from the many hundreds of thousands of tons of DU (‘depleted’ uranium’) weapons deployed by NATO forces around the world, and other sources (medical waste, spacecraft power systems).

Many hundreds (way more than 435) of civilian reactors exist and are in operation around the world right now, EACH of which has similar astronomical quantities of THE most dangerous materials known to exist.  MANY are located right on faults and/or close to cities.  Vermont Yankee, an old reactor of the same GE design as the exploded Fukushima ones, has approximately 690 tons of spent fuel in its storage facilities.

The U.S. Navy alone operates possibly as many as between 500 and 1000 reactors of its own, some aircraft carriers have 8 or more reactors on one ship.  They claim to have over 5000 ‘reactor-years’ under their belts = the biggest producer of radio-active waste on the planet.  Add in the military reactors of the other nuclear countries.

Tens of thousands of tons of uranium continue to be mined annually, from Kazakhstan, Canada and Australia.  China is currently building over 100 new reactors.

Almost NO ‘environmental organizations’ even MENTION any of this; obvious and text-book signs of acute radiation poisoning are showing up in Alaska seal and bear populations, not to mention the people of Japan…written off as ‘mystery diseases.’  Ones that DO ‘mention’ it, like Greenpeace or WHOI (‘assets’ of the CIA and U.S. Navy, respectively), merely maintain the illusion that ‘safe levels’ of these radio-nuclides exist, plus they totally down-play the levels found.

NO SAFE LEVELS OF SYNTHETIC RADIO-NUCLIDES EXIST PERIOD.  Read the works of Manhattan Project biologists and the warning of Dr. Linus Pauling, the only scientist ever to receive two Nobel prizes.

THE SITUATION HAS BEEN AT ‘MASS EXTINCTION’ LEVEL SINCE THE FIRST WEEK AFTER IT BEGAN.  All we’re talking now is ASTRONOMICAL OVER-KILL LEVELS.  The southern hemisphere ultimately is no safer than the north, people here will just mutate and die slightly later.  But it’s not going to happen over-night…it might take a generation or two or three.

COMING SOON:  a ‘near death experience’ for humanity or an ‘actual death experience’ for humanity?
